Representation of the Music Video

Representation of the Music Video
Who
In are music video we are going to have 4 characters in the band Pat, Harry, the Tom and ________. Pat is the lead guitar, Harry is on bass, Tom is on the Keyboard and ________ is the vocalist. There will be about 7 actors for the park scene but we don’t know who they are yet. The crew’s storyline is simple; all they are doing is playing along to the music. The park crew storyline is basically him and his mates hanging out together and he goes home and found a university letter to say that he has been accepted in the university.
What
Are music video involves a band performance and a story; the band performance will be used to break up the story at anytime. The story is about the main character going off to university and having to leave his friends behind. So it targets people are age and how hard it is when you have to make hard desertions like this.
Where
We have only chosen to places to film are music video, the e-learning centre and Whimpey Park. We chose the e-learning centre because it’s a big room and we can have the use of it quite easy unlike when we chose a radio station. Also if you didn’t know it was the e-learning centre then you would think it was a recording room. Whimpey Park was the other location we chose to go with, like the e-learning centre we both live close to it so availability is not a risk. But the main reason why we chose it was because we wanted it seem like as he is a university all of his mates are having fun without him, that’s why he finds it sad when he leaves.
Why
The chose Whimpey Park also on a technique issue, because of Dale camera the depth is better outside than it is inside. The characters we have chosen are good for the part because we didn’t really mind who was in it as long as we could get to them when we needed them. Again the main reason why the e-learning centre is because it’s easier to get at than a radio station and it can pass off as on also. So by changing the location we have limited the risks we have to take when filming the music video.

Risk Assessment

Risk Assessment
Because we filmed last year instead of doing a magazine cover I think we can avoid a lot of risks that people might take because they didn’t do a film last year. However there is still this that can go wrong when it comes to filming, as we found out last year.
We don’t have many risks with recording the video because Dale has his own video camera so I think that cuts down a lot of risks. But learning from last year we must make sure that when it come to editing the work we need to use the right software to be able to transfer it onto a DVD writer then eventually on DVD. Another risk that might happen is the location and weather we can get the location we want and if it will be available for when we want to record. Another technical risk we might have is that the camera that we are using doesn’t have a very good depth of field which is why we decided to change the location outside where the cameras depth is better than it is on the inside.
However working with Dale Luck, he seems to change his mind on what to do at the worst possible moments. For example on Friday he thought he would change the song about 4 weeks into the coursework which means we have to change most of the post. But the main reason for Dale to change the song was because we didn’t know if we could get the location we won’t and if we wanted to be happy with are work it would have to be right. So now we have to make sure that we choice a suitable location that we can get too regularly.
Also another risk that could happen is that are filming group may not be able to everyone at the same time, so for that reason we have to make a filming schedule then everyone can make room for that time.

Location Ideas

We have now changed the location of the video from a radio station to a park; the main reason for this is because we couldn’t get a radio station to film into and we have now realised that the camera looks better when we are filming outside. We already have a park in mind that we are going to use, which we both and the actors live close too. We also have one more location which would hopefully be in the e-learning centre at school.

Pitch - Evaluating Feedback

From the feedback we got from the pitch, it was pointed out to us that we were focusing too much on our band being a cover band of Radiohead that we've not really added much originality to the way they're being presented, instead having made them into basically a copy. We'll be working on the development of their own persona in the near future, possibly even renaming the band (after it's been pointed out by Mr Ford that the name 'Saxon Static' really feels too odd).

And really that was all the feedback we got from the other students. We don't really think we did a great job with the pitch, as it was kind of rushed, but we've got a clear idea of where we want to go with the band and the video and will probably make another post in the near future with the redesigned band.

'Lippy Kids' - Elbow

This song by 'Elbow' is the song we've chosen for our own music video, but the music video they've already got is a perfect example of not only what an illustration video is but also has the style of video we're going for, particularly with the shots that will be including the band. Pictured below are various shots in the music video that we'll be using similar shots to, mainly close ups of instruments and the like as opposed to having a heavy focus on the band members themselves.

The very relaxed atmosphere of the song also shows in this video, and hopefully it'll do the same in ours. Having gone through various idea before, this song seems to have a fairly simple yet great feel to it that should work perfectly for making a video for it.

Pitch - 'Music Video'

We weren't entirely sure whether the pitch was meant to be for the band or for the video, so we did both.

The song that our band, Saxon Static, will be singing is 'Talk Show Host', originally by Radiohead. The song has a very melancholic (?) feel to it, so we decided to craft that into the backstory of the band as well - that the band is disbanding, and this is one of the last songs on their final album. We think that story matches the lyrics quite well (with one of the reasons they're disbanding being they simply don't want to do it anymore, and the lyrics having certain lines like "I want to be someone else or I'll explode").

The genre of the video, at least right now (and hopefully it won't change), is illustration bordering on amplification. The current idea for the video is an actual talk show host broadcasting his final show before he retires for good, with the band Saxon Static playing their song over the radio whilst he sits and broods / interacts with the other people at the station.

Seeing as the band itself is a cover band of Radiohead, we decided to try and aim at a very similar audience, which we decided is probably young adults aged 16-25, probably students, with a more creative side - so people taking creative courses like art or music, as opposed to ICT or English Literature.

The band, being a cover/tribute band of Radiohead, is clearly going to reflect the style of that particular band, but in order to keep it from being a direct copy we've gone with trying to portray the band as basically a combination of the bands that influenced Radiohead (such as The Pixies and R.E.M.).

Radiohead, according to certain sites, spans the genres of alternative rock, experimental rock and electronic music, but to keep it simpler we've decided to just keep to the alternative rock genre.

And of course, we're aiming at basically the same people as Radiohead - young adults, possibly students, who like to listen to creative music and not just music that sounds like everything else on the charts.

'Stronger' - Kanye West

This video doesn't really have much to do with our current idea for what our music video is going to be like, considering it's from a completely different genre, but I really like the creative visuals and style that the video has in comparison with the majority of music videos these days.

And yes, I realise I've posted a lot of Kanye West videos. What can I say, the man's a genius.

Well the genre of this music video is rap; you can tell this just by the clothes that they are wearing.

Amplification, where the video has some relevance to the video but is still a bit strange.
The video.

Why did you choose the text you are analysing?
Because I had to choose a music video that was Amplification and thought I would choose a song that I know and like. So I came up with Fast Lane.

In what context did you encounter it?
I was going through my iPod to try and find a good song with a good video, then came across it.
What influence do you think this context might have had on your interpretation of the text?
My influence was at first that this good song but after I watched it a couple of more times I thought it was a hard video to actually produce.
Which conventions of the genre do you recognize in the text?
I recognise the rap genre, not because I know that Eminem is a rapper but because of the clothes that they are wearing and even the beat of the song.

To what extent does this text stretch the conventions of its genre?
Personally I don’t think it does

Where and why does the text depart from the conventions of the genre?
Not really anywhere because the whole video is in the warehouse, so it can’t change the genre.
What sort of audience did you feel that the video was aimed at (and how typical was this of the genre/style of music)?
The music was aimed at people that like Eminem music or any rap music but the video is a good one anyway and worth seeing even if you don’t like the music.
What sort of person does it assume you are?
Well if I am watching the video and listening to the music I guess it assumes I’m the kind of person that like rap music (and I do).
What responses does the video seem to expect from you?
Well it would expect a joyful response from the video and the music because I like this kind of music that he does.
How open to negotiation is your response (are you invited, instructed or coerced to respond in particular ways)?
Is there any penalty for not responding in the expected ways?
It really depends if you like the video or the music, because if you do then your going to react entertained but if you don’t you might turn the video off half way though and bored of it.
How typical do you think this video is of music videos?
It’s very typical because they are syncing the words to the music and as music videos go it’s the most obvious one to do. However adding all cartoon animation to it makes it more of an unusual video.

'All Of The Lights' - Kanye West, feat. Rihanna, Kid Cudi

Music Video - Song and Genre

We've decided to go with a music video within the amplification genre, and to use the song 'Lippy Kids' by Elbow. The song will have to be cut down to under 4 minutes, but other than that we think it'll be fine.

Moodboard - 'Video Style and Genre'

We'll be making a music video that fits into the amplification genre. We want the video to have a strong narrative that links to the lyrics and has the band's performance not be the majority of the shots, and think this is the best genre that that would fit into.

The various scenes and videos in the moodboard playlist are there to show the style that we're actually going for with our video, and in a couple very specific shots that will probably be used. The current idea that we've got for the video is that of a student in a group of friends falling in love and having to leave that group at the end of the video as his family moves away. If we have time or think it will fit in, we'd also add the extra level of it being the memories of an adult looking back on his childhood through things he finds in his cupboard, but really that won't be needed and will just be something we'll be adding at the end if we find the time to do it.

The majority of the videos in the playlist are there to show the position of the band within the narrative but in the background of the story, but there are a couple very specific videos that have a feel to them that we really want to capture in ours - the scenes in Breaking Bad focusing on the inner turmoil of Jesse Pinkman, and the music video for Lindisfarne by James Blake. These videos all include a character suffering emotionally, especially towards the end of the music video, and those final shots of the girl in the vehicle as it moves away in the music video are very similar to what we have in mind for our final shots.

The video for Over My Head by The Fray is also similar in style to ours, in that we haven't decided on the band being a part of the narrative or a seperate set of shots like the Fray's video, in which the majority of the shots are a part of a narrative and the band are shown performing in shots completely seperate from the narrative as far as I can tell.

This Animoto presentation is there to show various pictures of specific shots from the videos in the moodboard list, as well as to portray the general style we're going for both with the band and the video, taking examples from bands and other videos.

Disjuncture
The video don’t have anything to do with the music.

Why did you choose the text you are analysing?
Because it a very good music video and song. I like the way that they have thought out side the box when making this video.
In what context did you encounter it?
I just tried to think of an interesting music video while going though my iPod and Rockstar by Nickelback came up.
What influence do you think this context might have had on your interpretation of the text?
Well I think it has gave us more ideas on the sort of music video we could do.

Which conventions of the genre do you recognize in the text?
Disjuncture is the genre of this music video because the video has nothing to do with the song.

To what extent does this text stretch the conventions of its genre?
It doesn’t really stretch the convention of the genre.

Where and why does the text depart from the conventions of the genre?
Probably when the act on some of the lyrics so you know what it’s about or when you see Nickelback in concert at the end.
What sort of audience did you feel that the video was aimed at (and how typical was this of the genre/style of music)?
Guessing that the video was aimed at people that like listening to Nickelback music. And for me he comes under the category of quite a rocky genre. So he would be targeting people that like rock music.
What sort of person does it assume you are?
Well if I am watching a Nickelback music video guessing a guy that likes Nickelback music.
What responses does the video seem to expect from you?
That a lot of people want the same things in the song and that everyone wants to be the big shot in life
How open to negotiation is your response (are you invited, instructed or coerced to respond in particular ways)?
Yeah I would say that’s it’s an inviting video because the people that are singing it are smiling so it gives you an inviting feeling. (But that’s just me)
Is there any penalty for not responding in the expected ways?
Well if you don’t like the music then you would get bored and therefore not entertained.
How typical do you think this video is of music videos?
Not very because it’s a very unusual video, but a typical rock video would be them at a concert in my eyes with lots of guitars and drums.
